    FAQ's: Gutter Cleaning in Norwich

For Norwich homeowners, keeping on top of guttering maintenance is a genuinely important part of looking after your property. Norfolk experiences some of the driest conditions in the UK on average, but when rain does arrive –
often in prolonged spells during autumn and winter – it needs somewhere to go. Guttering that is blocked with leaves, moss, or compacted debris simply cannot cope, and the result is water spilling over the sides and working its way into brickwork, window frames, and foundations. Norwich has a rich variety of property types, from the flint-faced cottages and Victorian terraces found in areas like Unthank Road and Heigham, to modern detached homes on the outskirts in Costessey and Cringleford –  and blocked gutters pose a risk to all of them. Two professional cleans a year is all that stands between a well-maintained home and a repair bill you’d rather not face.

Your guttering will usually make its condition fairly clear if you know what to look for. The most common indicators that a clean is overdue include:

    • Water spilling over the front of the gutter during rainfall rather than draining properly through the downpipe
    • Visible sagging or sections of guttering detaching from the fascia board
    • Moss, weeds, or self-seeded plants taking root along the gutter run
    • Damp patches or tide marks on external walls, particularly beneath the roofline
    • Birds or insects nesting in or around the guttering on a regular basis

If your Norwich property is showing any of these signs, we’d recommend getting a clean booked in without delay.

We recommend two cleans per year for most properties in Norwich – once in spring to clear whatever has accumulated over the winter months, and again in late autumn after the trees have shed their leaves. Norwich is surrounded by mature parkland and tree-lined streets, particularly in the Golden Triangle and around Eaton Park, and properties in these areas can find their guttering fills up surprisingly quickly. If your home backs onto woodland or sits beneath overhanging trees, it may well be worth scheduling an additional visit during the year to stay on top of things.

We work with all guttering types and materials found on Norwich properties, including uPVC, aluminium, cast iron, and timber gutters, as well as modern seamless systems. Given the number of older period properties across the city, we’re well accustomed to handling original cast iron and timber guttering with the care it requires. Downpipes are cleared on every visit as standard, ensuring the full drainage system is functioning properly. Soffit and fascia board cleaning is available as an optional extra –  a popular addition for customers who want a comprehensive roofline clean in a
    single appointment.

We take health and safety seriously on every job we carry out in Norwich and across Norfolk. Our team holds SSIP registration and is fully IPAF certified for working at height, with PASMA certification covering any commercial work that involves mobile access tower equipment. The access method we use –  whether secured ladders, professional harnesses, or scaffolding – is always determined by the specific requirements of the property in question. You can be confident that every member of our team attending your property is fully trained, certificated, and experienced in working safely at height.

In most circumstances, light winds present no obstacle to carrying out a thorough and safe gutter clean. Norfolk is known for being exposed to brisk winds at times, particularly in the autumn and winter months, and we’re experienced in working in typical East Anglian conditions. Should the weather turn severe enough to make working at height unsafe, we will rearrange your appointment and keep you fully informed – your safety and that of our team always takes priority.

The time needed depends largely on the size and roofline complexity of your property. For most residential gutter cleans in Norwich, you can expect the job to be completed within 30 minutes to two hours. A standard terraced or semi-detached home will often be finished within the hour, while larger detached properties or those with more involved roof layouts may take a little longer. Commercial properties and larger buildings will require a more substantial time allowance, and we’ll always provide a clear estimate before we begin.

We operate throughout the year across Norwich and the surrounding area, but we will not work in high winds or icy conditions where safety cannot be assured. If adverse weather means we need to postpone your appointment, we’ll be in touch straight away to arrange an alternative date with as little disruption to you as possible.

Not at all – gutter cleaning is carried out entirely from outside, and we have no need to enter your home at any point. All we require is safe access around the exterior of your property. There’s no need to be in when we arrive; a great many of our Norwich customers are out at work during their appointment. Provided we can reach the guttering safely, we’ll complete the work and ensure you’re notified once everything is done.

    Recent Case Study

    Recent Case Study

    Date: March 2025
    Service: Gutter cleaning and inspection
Property type: Residential flats, Parmentergate Court, Norwich

We were contacted by the managing agent for a residential block at Parmentergate Court in Norwich, where the gutters had not been properly cleared for the best part of sixteen years. The building, a multi-occupancy block typical of the kind of older residential conversions found across the city centre, had developed a persistent drainage problem that had become something of an unwanted feature –  during any significant rainfall, water was pooling and running across the courtyard below rather than being directed away through the downpipes as intended.

Alain attended the site and carried out a full inspection of the guttering across all elevations before beginning work. On a building of this age and type, debris accumulates in ways that are not always visible from the ground –  compacted leaf matter, moss growth, and years of fine sediment had built up to the point where the system was barely functioning. Working methodically along each run, Alain cleared the blockages and ensured every downpipe was flowing freely before moving on. The scale of what was removed made it clear why the courtyard flooding had become such a recurring issue.

By the time the job was complete, the guttering was draining correctly for the first time in years. The transformation was
immediately apparent –  the courtyard water feature, as the residents had taken to calling it, was gone. On a residential block in the middle of Norwich, where water sitting against the building’s lower structure over repeated wet seasons carries a genuine risk of damp ingress and longer-term masonry damage, getting the system back into working order was well overdue.

On a separate visit in the same area, Bogdan attended a residential property in Norwich where he had carried out the annual clean on two previous occasions. He arrived, worked through the gutters and downpipes with his usual thoroughness, and provided a full photographic record on completion so the homeowner could see clearly that every section had been attended to. The fact that Bogdan recognised the property from previous visits and approached the job with the same care each time is exactly the kind of consistency that makes routine maintenance genuinely reliable rather than hit and miss.

Both jobs are a reasonable illustration of what gutter maintenance across Norwich actually looks like in practice –  whether it is a long-neglected block in the city centre finally being brought back into order, or a well-kept residential property staying that way through regular annual attention. The difference between the two situations is largely one of timing. Catching problems early, before water has had the chance to find its way into walls, soffits, or foundations, keeps the work straightforward and the costs proportionate. Leaving it, as the Parmentergate Court block demonstrated, tends to result in a much larger job and a longer period of avoidable damage in the meantime.
